Farkkumatto nimeltään Meri/ A rag rug made from old jeans

Olen kerännyt jo jonkin aikaa vanhoja farkkuja kahteen eri projektiin: päiväpeittoon ja farkkuräsymattoon. Päiväpeitto odottaa edelleenkin tekijäänsä, mutta farkkumatto on nyt vihdoin valmis!

Henrin kastamana matto sai nimekseen Meri. Poika ilmoitti onnellisena sen huoneeseensa saatuaan että nyt hänellä on meri, jossa voi leikkiä Lego City poliisi ja rosvo -legoilla vankilasaarelta pakoa. Poika haaveilee kaupassa myytävän Lego City vankilasaaren perään ja luin rivien välistä että matto olisi jälleen yksi uusi hyvä syy hankkia kyseinen paketti hänelle. Meidän vanhempien mielipide kun on ollut uutta isoa legopakettia kohtaan kielteinen legomäärien ylittäessä jo nyt lastenhuoneen säilytystilat.

Omasta mielestäni maton voisi kastaa vielä tarkemmin muistojen mereksi, sillä tulin kutoneeksi tähän mattoon kirjaimellisesti osan muistojani. Maton materiaali on pitkälti leikattu yhteisiltä Aasian reppumatkoitamme ostetuista farkuista sekä omista äitiysfarkuistani. Ilokseni sain lisää materiaalia mattoon myös naapurista FB:n kautta farkkumateriaalitarvetta kuuluteltuani.  

En tullut laskeneeksi kuinka monien fakkujen lahkeet mattoon leikkasin, mutta kudetta kului 2,1 m pitkään ja 80 cm leveään mattoon noin 4 kg. 

Useiden valmistusvaiheiden ohella farkkukangas osoittautui hyvin pölyäväksi materiaaliksi. Leikkasin keräämieni farkkujen lahkeet noin 2,5 cm leveiksi suikaleiksi, jotka sitten ompelin koneella yhteen pitkiksi kudottaviksi kudenauhoiksi. Valitsin yhteenommaltavat suikaleet jo ompeluvaiheessa niin että kuteesta tuli kirjavaa, jolloin itse kutominen oli hyvin helppoa. Housujen vyötärö ja taskuosat säästin päiväpeitettä varten.

I have been collecting old jeans for a while for two different projects: for a rag rug and bed cover. The bed cover is still waiting for final inspiration, but the rag runner I did finally finish!

Henri, my oldest, gave it a name Meri (the sea) and was glad that finally he have a sea in his room! The boy has been dreaming of the sea since seeing the Lego City jail island at one shops toy section and I think this is his way of saying, that now when he is having a sea in the room, there should also be the jail iseland lego.

From my point of view this runner is a sea of memories as I cut and handweaved in it big amount of them. Quite many of the jeans were bought from our Asian trips done before the kinds, in addition with the maternity jeans I weared when I was expecting our three kids. Few pairs I also received from the neighbours and it is a nice to think of them and remember of their helpfulness also. 

The runner size is l*w 210cm*80cm and it contains 4 Kg of old jeans. Unfortunately I don't remember how many pairs did I actually cut for it.

All the jeans were cut for stripes, 2,5cm width, which I then sewed togeher as a long rag/ string. Handweaving I did by using the loom described for example in this wikipedia info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loom
